Elgin News Digest: Moms ride free Sunday at the Fox River Trolley Museum; St. Hugh church holding plant, craft, bake sale Saturday

Moms ride free Sunday at the Fox River Trolley Museum

All mothers ride for free on Mother’s Day when accompanied by a paid admission  to the Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin, which opens for the season Sunday, May 11.

Sunday hours at the 365 S. La Fox St. venue are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

New this season is the recently completed addition to the 41-year-old trolley barn, which was built by volunteers, according to spokeswoman Kathleen Jamieson. Track still needs to be put down so the addition connects to the museum’s main rail line, she said.

“The addition allows us to move cars currently in the barn northward and begin some spring cleaning and reorganizing,” Jamieson said.

New concrete included with the addition also allows volunteers to use train jacks to lift up Car 20 to replace its wheels. Built in 1902, this is the oldest operating interurban in the country, Jamieson said.

The museum has about three dozen train or trolley cars in its collection, with some dating back to 1887. For more information, go to foxtrolley.org, email info@foxtrolley.org or call 847-697-4676.
