Renovation work closes Duerr Forest Preserve in South Elgin till fall

Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve in South Elgin is closed for renovations through September, according to a post on the Forest Preserve District of Kane County’s Facebook page.

Work being done includes repairs to the parking lots near the trolley station and Fox River; new shelters and restrooms; realigned bike trails to enhance accessibility to River Bend Trail; and a new ADA-accessible boat and kayak launch.

The work should be done sometime in early September, the post said.

Applications being accepted for Elgin Township Mental Health Board

Elgin Township is seeking qualified applicants for its Community Mental Health Board.

Those wishing to apply should submit a letter of interest to Township Supervisor Ken Bruderle, according to a news release. Mental health board members are appointed by the supervisor and must approved by the township board.

Guidelines dictate that applicants must live in Elgin Township. For a list of qualifications and disqualifications, go to elgintownship.com/mental-health-board.

‘Woofstock’ fundraiser to be held Sunday at East Dundee Depot

Hoof, Woof & Meow Animal Rescue will hold its 11th annual  “Woofstock” fundraiser from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 30, outside The Depot at 319 N. River St. in downtown East Dundee.

The event will feature raffles, kids crafts and live music, according to the rescue group’s website. Money raised will help the Elgin-based nonprofit provide food, supplies and medical care for animals.

RSVP to attend the Symonds-Madison Fourth of July BBQ

A free barbecue will be held from 2 to 5 p.m Thursday, July 4, in the parking lot at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St., Elgin.

The family-owned business will provide free hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and cookies, according to the Symonds-Madison Facebook page.

Gail Borden Public Library to hold a touch-a-truck event July 1

The Gail Borden Public Library will be holding a touch-a-truck event from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 1, in the parking lot of the main library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin

An Elgin fire engine, Elgin police car, a school bus and ambulance will be among the vehicles for children to explore, according to a news release.
