Risé Jones tribute to be held Sunday at Elgin library

A tribute to Risé Jones’ legacy and impact on the community will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin.

The event will feature music and testimonials from friends and colleagues, according to a news release.

Jones, 58, died Dec. 7. She was the executive director of Hamilton Wings, a program that provides after-school programs for underserved children in the Elgin area, and served on the boards for several local organizations, including YWCA Elgin, Elgin Community College and the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce.

FEMA to discuss being prepared for floods in East Dundee

Staff from FEMA Region 5 will hold a free, public program on flood preparedness and mitigation from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at the East Dundee Police Station boardroom, 115 E. 3rd St.

Topics to be covered will include insurance options for flood-prone areas, spring flooding preparedness, understanding floodplain maps and nature-based flood management strategies, according to a social media post. The one-hour presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

Kane sheriff’s office to award college scholarship

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office will be awarding a $500 scholarship through the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association to a student wanting to pursue higher education during the 2025-26 academic year.

Scholarship money can be applied to tuition, books and fees only, according to a news release. Students must be enrolled full time at a certified institution of higher learning in Illinois.

Carpentersville announces lighting contest winners

Carpentersville has announced the nine winning homes in its 2024 holiday lighting contest, which were awarded in five categories.

  • People’s Choice Facebook Winner: 3521 Carlisle Lane;
  • Clark W. Griswold (most over-the-top): 310 N. Washington St. (first-place) and 812 Salem Lane (second-place);
  • Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree (choreographed to music): 2403 Woodside Drive (first-place) and 2913 Deerpath Lane (second-place);
  • Small Space (apartment, townhome, condo): 7348 Grandview Court (first-place) and 317 N. Green St. (second-place);
  • Traditional: 102 Port Cove (first-place) and 841 Navajo Drive (second-place).

First-place winners received $500 gift certificates. The second-place prize was a $250 gift certificates.

Health center holding Black history, HIV/AIDS event

Open Door Health Center of Illinois will hold a “Did You Know” on Black history and HIV/AIDS awareness from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at its Elgin location,1665 Larkin Ave.

Open Door is hosting the free, public event to help break down barriers Black people face when addressing their health care, according to a news release.

The afternoon will feature food; guest speakers; client testimonials; a musical performance by the Grace Deliverance Outreach Ministry Choir; “New Faces of HIV/AIDS,” a photography exhibit by Gil Feliciano; and an art show featuring Black artists curated by Side Street Studio Arts.

Free HIV/AIDS testing will be available throughout the event.
