South Elgin taking purchase orders for Veterans Plaza pavers

South Elgin is accepting orders from people or groups that want to purchase pavers honoring military veterans that will be part of the village’s new Veterans Plaza.

To ensure a paver is ready for installation during plaza construction, orders must be submitted by Thursday, April 11, a news release said. Any orders received after the deadline will be installed in 2025.

The plaza will accompany the new public safety center currently under construction. The site will include lighted flag poles, a wall with brass plaques for Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Space Force, a small water feature, a sensory garden and the engraved pavers, the release said.

Engraved pavers cost $75. Order forms are available at South Elgin Village Hall, 10 N. Water St., and online at www.southelgin.com/paver.

Open gym programs for spring break offered at Walton center

Hanover Township will be offering free spring break open gym programs from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 25-29, at the Izaak Walton Youth Center, 899 Jay St., Elgin.

Sports, gym activities, and arts-and-crafts projects will be available for children ages 5 to 14, according to a news release.

Dundee Library holding Easter egg hunt March 30 in East Dundee

An Easter egg hunt will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, March 30, at the Dundee Library, 555 Barrington Ave., East Dundee.

Staff will provide bags that each child can use to collect up to 10 eggs at the free event, according to the library’s website.

Sleepy Hollow Service Club’s annual egg hunt set for March 30

The Service Club of Sleepy Hollow will host its annual Easter egg hunt starting at noon Saturday, March 30, in Sabatino Park, 145 Thorobred Lane, Sleepy Hollow.

Participants will be divided into groups based on age, and there will be a special collection for children with special needs, according to the club’s Facebook page. When the empty eggs collect are returned, the child is given for candy. One of the plastic eggs will contain a golden ticket that entitles the bearer to a grand prize.

The Easter Bunny will mingling with the children and available for photos.

Elgin library holding two kids events about upcoming solar eclipse

Two events through which children can learn about the April 8 solar eclipse are being held at the main Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.

An interactive Solar Eclipse Storytime for kids ages 2 to 6 is set for 10 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 1. No registration is necessary to attend.

Later the same day, from 2 to 2:45 p.m., a “Family STEAM: Total Solar Eclipse” program will offer eclipse-related activities centered on the rare celestial event.

Bacteria to be in spotlight at Kane County forest preserve event

Participants can learn about bacteria and its function in the natural world during a Kane County Forest Preserve District program on April 25.

“EcoLab: Color-changing Bacteria” will be presented at 7 p.m. at Creek Bend Nature Center at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve at 37W700 Dean St. in St. Charles.

During this hands-on program, designed for children and young adults 10 or older, participants will construct a “color-changing bacteria zoo” to take home, officials said.

EcoLab is an environmental education program held four times a year that offers young people the opportunity to analyze and learn about the natural world through a science-based approach, organizers said.
