Sugar & Rhyme Coffeehouse in Elgin wins $10,000 business grant

Sugar & Rhyme Coffeehouse in downtown Elgin is one of 500 small businesses across the United States to be awarded a $10,000 grant from American Express and Main Street America.

This program is part of American Express’s “Backing Small” initiative that provides financial support and resources to small business owners experiencing economic hardships, according to the Main Street America website.

Sugar & Rhyme opened in 2023 and is located at 203 E. Chicago St.

Castro and Anderson Humane holding free pet wellness event

A free pet wellness event being hosted by state Sen. Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, and Anderson Humane will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, in the main lobby of Building F at Elgin Community College.

Attendees can receive free basic care vaccines for cats and dogs while supplies last, a news release said. There is no registration requirement or household pet limit, but vaccines will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

“As a dog owner, I know the important role pets play in our families,” Castro said in the release. “This free event is a great opportunity to connect with the leading animal welfare organization in our community, meet other animal lovers and get your pets up-to-date on essential vaccines.”

Concerts in the Park being held in Geneva weekly in July

Geneva Park District’s Concerts in the Park series will be held at 7 p.m. every Wednesday in July at River Park at 151 N. River Lane beginning July 10.

Food trucks will be on site, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase, organizers said. Attendees are invited to bring their own their lawn chairs and blankets.

The concert and food lineup is:

  • July 10, Mr. Myers playing “Caribbean rock” and GV’s Italian Street Food truck on site;
  • July 17, country band Hillbilly Rockstarz and Hippie Grilled Cheese Co. food truck;
  • July 24, FeelGood Party Band playing songs from the 1960s to today and K’s Vending food truck;
  • July 31, The Stingrays playing rock music of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s and Waffadilla food truck.

Concerts will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.

Kane County hike being planned for parents with strollers

A special hike for parents with strollers will be held by the Kane County Forest Preserve District from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at Muirhead Springs Forest Preserve at 42W855 Bahr Road in Hampshire.

The interpretive hike will highlight local ecology and the beauty of the preserve, district officials said. Paths that are friendly for strollers will be used.

Applications for St. Charles’ annual Scarecrow Contest available

Applications are now available for the Scarecrow Contest that’s part of St. Charles Scarecrow Weekend, which this year will be held Oct. 11 to 13.

Applications can be found online at www.scarecrowfest.com/scarecrowcontestapplication. It can be submitted electronically or printed out and mailed to or dropped off at the St. Charles Business Alliance at 2 E. Main St., St. Charles, IL 60174.

The deadline to apply is Sept. 15. Prizes ranging from $100 to $500 will be awarded in a variety of categories, including Mega/Mechanical, Business, Clubs/Not-for-Profit/Schools Category and Individual categories.
