Visitors can check out Anderson Humane at open house Saturday

Anderson Humane will be holding an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 27.

During the open house, visitors will be able to take facility tours, play with adoptable kittens, meet Isabell the opossum, sponsor a kennel or enclosure, and visit interactive booths, according to the nonprofit animal shelter’s website.

School supplies sought for Hanover Township backpack program

Hanover Township is seeking donations of new school supplies and backpacks for its annual distribution to students returning to school in the fall.

Items needed include backpacks, notebooks, loose leaf paper, pencils, markers, crayons, scissors, flash drives, pens and glue sticks, according to a news release. Donations of retail gift cards to use for the purchasing of school supply items are also being accepted.

Items can be dropped off at Hanover Town Hall or Hanover Township Senior Center, 250 S. Route 59, Bartlett; Hanover Township Astor Avenue Community Center, 7431 Astor Ave., Hanover Park; and Hanover Township Izaak Walton Youth Center, 899 Jay St., Elgin.

Last year, 1,257 backpacks filled with school supplies were given to township youth.

This year distribution will be from Aug. 6-9. Proof of residency is required and there is a limit of one backpack per child. To register, go to www.hanover-township.org.

Joint town hall meeting to be held Monday by Moeller, Ness

State Reps. Anna Moeller, D-Elgin, and Suzanne Ness, D-Crystal Lake, will hold a joint summer town hall meeting from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 29, at the Dundee Library, 555 Barrington Ave., East Dundee.

Among the topics to be discussed will be the major initiatives from the spring legislative session, which included a balanced state budget, increased funding for education and other programs, and state funds secured for local organizations, a news release said.

The legislators also will highlight key legislation such as the Healthcare Protection Act, which the governor signed into law this month. Led by Moeller in the House, the act aims to prevent insurance companies from using delays and other tactics to prevent patients from receiving proper health care access and coverage, the release said.

East Dundee Fire Protection District gets $245,000 FEMA grant

East Dundee Fire Protection District has been awarded a $245,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant will pay for self-contained breathing apparatus equipment, which allows firefighters to operate safely in hazardous environments and ensures a continuous supply of clean air during fire and rescue operations, a news release said.

It also includes advanced features such as enhanced respiratory protection, improved voice communication and increased durability.

Deadline Wednesday for township senior utility assistance

Applications for the Elgin Township Cares Senior Utility Assistance Program are due Wednesday, July 31.

The program helps income-qualifying Elgin Township residents age 65 and older pay their utility bills, according to the township website.

Mobile Museum of Tolerance at Dundee library Monday and Tuesday

The Mobile Museum of Tolerance will be at the Dundee Library in East Dundee from noon to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, July 29-30.

In conjunction with the mobile’s appearance, Sarah Sullivan, a history and business instructor at McHenry County College, will present “Beyond Rosa: The Women of the Montgomery Bus Boycott” at 1 p.m. July 29 in the Rakow Center’s Adult Activities Center, 665 Barrington Ave., Carpentersville.

The Mobile Museum of Tolerance, developed in collaboration with the Midwest office of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Illinois State Board of Education, aims to inspire people to use their voices to speak up against anti-Semitism, bullying, racism, intolerance, and hate, according to a news release.

The library is located at 555 Barrington Ave.
