Elmwood Park trustees approve restaurants serving liquor with breakfast

At least two Elmwood Park restaurants will be able to serve alcohol with breakfast after the Village Board approved a change that creates a new class of liquor licenses in the village.

At the second of two board meetings Feb. 5 – which immediately followed the first one – trustees approved an ordinance that will allow two restaurants in town to serve alcohol in the morning time. The change in the alcohol sales law is intended to help some businesses serve drinks like mimosas and bloody marys with brunch. It amends the village’s existing alcoholic beverage code.

“This creates a new class of liquor license,” Village Manager Paul Volpe told Pioneer Press after the meeting. “This would allow (license holders) to sell liquor as early as 6 a.m. provided they’re serving breakfast as well.”

The ordinance was approved without comment or debate by the board and, at present, the change would only apply to two restaurants, Eggsperience on Conti Parkway and the Sportz Nook on Grand Avenue.

During the first meeting trustees held Feb. 5, police promotions were recognized and plans for a village parking lot were approved.

Detective Brian Hock was promoted to detective sergeant and Officer Robert Logisz was promoted to first watch patrol sergeant. Both were sworn in to their new titles and roles during the Feb. 5, 2024 Village Board meeting.

The parking area will be constructed in the 2500 block of 75th Court, and comes with the recommendation of the traffic and safety commission.

Trustee Jonathan Zivojnovic praised the plan, saying it will free up street parking.

“What’s nice about this space is, this is going to be new. We’re purchasing a new area and we’re going to raze it and make a municipal parking lot,” Zivojnovic said.

He said the additional space, which will be permit parking, should allow for more on-street parking options.

Also at the meeting, Village President Angelo Saviano administered the oath of office to Detective Brian Hock as part of his promotion to detective sergeant, and to second watch Officer Robert Logisz who was promoted to first watch patrol sergeant.

“They’re two fine law officers and they’ve been here a long time,” Zivojnovic told Pioneer Press.

Volpe called the promotions “well deserved.”
