Ex-boyfriend charged in Shelby domestic incident

A Shelby man was charged Thursday for beating his ex-girlfriend and barricading himself at her home, leading to a SWAT team callout.

Zachary Kaplan, 42, is charged with domestic battery resulting in moderate bodily injury and misdemeanor domestic battery.

He was released on his own recognizance Friday.

A hearing is set June 3.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded May 27 to the 1700 block of Westwood Drive.

The woman’s roommate said when he got back, Kaplan had hit her and he heard someone firing a gun off around in back.

After the Lake County SWAT team was called, an officer grabbed Kaplan by his wrists through a bathroom window while other officers went through the back door to arrest him.

The woman had a visible bloody lip, bruised eye and scratches on her arms.

She declined a medical evaluation. Later, she didn’t show for a special victims unit interview.

A detective wrote he didn’t interview Kaplan at the jail because he appeared drunk.
