Fire at apartment complex near Arlington Heights displaces about 20 people, fire department says

As many as 20 people were displaced after an apartment building caught fire in the northwest suburbs Tuesday evening, according to the Long Grove Fire Protection District.

The blaze broke out at about 6:49 p.m. in a six unit apartment building in the 2300 block of West Nichols Road in unincorporated Cook County, near Arlington Heights, the fire department said in a news release. The first crews arrived just before 7 p.m., and saw flames coming from the second and third floors of the building.

It took about 40 minutes to get the fire under control with help from more than 20 other fire districts and agencies, the department said.

Paramedics assessed the building’s occupants, and four were transported to local hospitals with smoke exposure, the department said. There were two occupants who were assessed, but not transported.

The Red Cross assisted 15 to 20 displaced residents with shelter arrangement, the department said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
