Fire at Evanston home displaces family, kills pet, per fire department

Evanston firefighters responded to a fire at a home in the 2300 block of Emerson in the early morning hours of May 2. All of the residents were able to exit the home safety, but a pet died in the fire, they said.

At approximately 2:33 a.m., the Evanston Fire Department was dispatched to the reported fire and encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions, per a department statement. Firefighters  initiated an interior attack to control the blaze.

The department said its firefighters brought the fire under control within 15 minutes of the initial dispatch.

The residence, which was occupied by four adults and three children, was safely evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival, according to the department. One adult was evaluated by EMS at the scene but refused transport to the hospital.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the fire originated in the basement and quickly spread to the first and second floors. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians. One pet died.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced family with temporary housing arrangements, the fire department said.
