Fire leaves mixed-use building in Aurora uninhabitable, fire department says

A structure fire Thursday evening left a two-story building on Aurora’s East Side uninhabitable, the Aurora Fire Department said in a news release on Friday.

The fire occurred in a two-story, mixed-use building on the 1000 block of Dearborn Avenue that housed a mechanic shop and residence, the release said.

The fire department responded to the fire at around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, encountering heavy smoke and flames from the second-floor windows, the department said in the release. Entering through the front of the building, they found an active fire on the second floor.

The department searched both floors to ensure no one was in the building, secured utilities to prevent additional hazards and brought the fire under control after “extensive overhaul to check for hidden fire,” the release said.

One person who arrived at the scene was treated for minor smoke inhalation and released, according to the release. The department deemed the building uninhabitable following the fire, officials said.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, according to the release.
