Fire on Aurora’s far East Side damages multi-family building, displaces residents

A fire on Aurora’s far East Side damaged a multi-family residential building and left four adult residents displaced, officials said.

On Friday at around 2:30 p.m., Aurora firefighters responded to a report of a fire in a basement at a two-story, multi-family building in the 400 block of Plaza Place, according to a news release from the Aurora Fire Department. Officials said in the release that a total of 26 firefighters responded and put out the fire within 20 minutes without any injuries.

The first firefighters to arrive found heavy smoke coming from the front and rear of the building, the release said. As firefighters pushed into the building with a firehose, they found high heat conditions in the basement where the fire was located, according to officials.

After the fire was put out, crews remained on the scene for a couple of hours to make sure the fire did not spread further within the building or to any nearby buildings, officials said. Victim services was contacted to help the displaced residents, the release said.

In total, four engine companies, two truck companies, three medic units and two chief officers responded to the fire, according to the release.

Officials said the fire is still under investigation by the Aurora Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Team.
