A former lieutenant with the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District has been found guilty of stealing from the fire district, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office announced on Friday.
Kane County Judge David Kliment found Greg M. Algrim, 47, guilty of 13 felony counts and six misdemeanor counts of theft, officials said. Algrim waived his right to a jury trial.
Prosecutors said that Algrim stole over $17,000 by falsifying overtime hours in the district’s scheduling system, which he had access to because of his rank of lieutenant and his administrative privileges, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Between August 2019 and September 2021, Algrim would log into the system just before pay day, add and approve overtime hours that he did not actually work to his schedule, then receive pay for those unworked shifts, according to the release.
Algrim was in charge of approving shifts and overtime hours for all employees, officials said in the release.
Kliment set Algrim’s next court appearance for May 30 at the Kane County Judicial Center for sentencing, the release said.
