Four charged after carjacking, shooting, chase into Illinois

Four men are charged after stealing a red Hyundai Sonata in Calumet City, shooting two DoorDash delivery people in Indiana, trying to steal a Tesla in Merrillville, then leading police on a chase back into Illinois.

The driver, Kamerin Young, 19, of Dolton, Illinois, and three passengers are each charged in Lake Superior Court with over a dozen felonies, including attempted murder and armed robbery. A fifth man — the brother of another charged — is listed in documents, but is not currently charged, according to public records.

None are in custody. When arrested, Young is ordered held without bail.

Three teens in the car, including the two brothers, are from South Holland; while the fifth is from Harvey.

Merrillville Police responded just before 11 p.m. March 2 to near 55th Avenue and Chase Street.

A pair told investigators they were driving to Merrillville from Main Street and Colfax Street in Griffith to deliver a DoorDash order when a red car cut them off and blocked them. Three or four masked and armed men got out of the red car.

When the DoorDash driver reversed to escape, they heard 5-6 gunshots, wounding the man in the shoulder and grazing his female passenger in her shoulder. The car broke down soon after.

About 10 minutes later, police responded to Aladdin Pita, 3790 W. 80th Lane in Merrillville. A female employee with a Tesla said three males got out and tried to carjack her vehicle at gunpoint as she was leaving.

“Give me your keys, or we’ll kill you,” one said.

They took her non-car keys, a gold necklace and two rings. When they couldn’t find her car keys, they took off in the Sonata, records show.

Multiple police agencies got involved in the chase, including Calumet City, Dolton and Illinois State Police.

When the stolen Sonata took off from Aladdin Pita, police tracked them going north at around 85-100 mph on the Bishop Ford Expressway.

The five men were arrested after they ran from the car near the 14300 block of Chicago Road in Dolton.

One teen hid under a white truck, then fought with officers. One cop kneed him in the chest and face before the teen could grab a gun.

Another teen told police he helped steal the Sonata — a rental car with Michigan plates — at gunpoint earlier that night while wearing a Michael Myers mask. The woman they stole it from had two kids there, including a teenager and a baby.

Young is charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of attempted robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, attempted robbery resulting in bodily injury, four counts of armed robbery, three counts of battery by means of a deadly weapon, one count of battery resulting in serious bodily injury and battery resulting in moderate bodily injury.
