On May 17, police personnel were on the roof and in the drive-through of Dunkin’ Donuts, 10131 W. Grand Ave., in Franklin Park, starting with the early morning rush hour and going until noon. The effort was to raise money for athletes who compete with the Illinois Special Olympics.

The cops raised $4,398, according to the Facebook page.

People who donated money to the “Cop on a Rooftop” fundraiser as they patronized the coffee and doughnut shop were given a coupon for a free sweet on their next visit. With a $10 donation, donors received a Dunkin’ Donuts reusable cup and a coupon for a free hot or iced coffee, organizers explained on social media.

T-shirts, hats, pins and raffle tickets were also sold.

The 55-year-old Special Olympic Illinois is a nonprofit organization – part of a larger, global one – that includes more than 55,000 athletes, coaches, partners, volunteers and more. The organization offers year-round training and competition in 18 sports to the competing athletes, including ones with special needs, according to the organization website.
