Orland Park’s “Furniture Row” on La Grange Road has another occupant with the opening of a Steinhafels Furniture and bedding store in Orland Park Place, south of Orland Square mall.
The Milwaukee-based retailer announced the store’s this week, and it’s in a nearly 100,000-square-foot space previously occupied by Bed Bath & Beyond and SteinMart, which closed their Orland Park stores in late 2020.
“Our new Orland Park Steinhafels is located right in the heart of Orland Park’s Furniture
Row,” said Fred Schweinert, vice president of sales and stores, in a news release. “We are confident that our Orland Park Steinhafels will deliver a furniture
shopping experience unseen in this area.”
Other furniture outlets along the street include Ashley Furniture, Bob’s Discount Furniture, Darvin Furniture, Penny Mustard and Walter E. Smithe.
Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau said similar to the village’s auto row, with multiple vehicle dealerships along 159th Street bordering Tinley Park, the village also hosts several furniture outlets along La Grange.
Steinhafels has furniture outlets in the Chicago area including Crystal Lake, Downers Grove, Harwood Heights and Schaumburg and said it will open a store next year in
Merrillville, Indiana.
The company was founded in Milwaukee in 1934 and is employee owned.
In opening the Orland Park store, the company will benefit from a sales tax sharing agreement approved by Orland Park in October 2022, that could return up to $2 million to Steinhafels.
Under the terms of the agreement, Steinhafels said it expected to spend more than $8.6 million to renovate the space vacated by Bed Bath and SteinMart and make parking lot improvements.
Orland Park Place is on the east side of La Grange Road, south of 151st Street and south of Orland Square.
Previously an enclosed shopping mall, Park Place tenants include Ashley Furniture, Dick’s Sporting Goods, DSW, Kohl’s and Nordstrom Rack.
The sales tax sharing agreement calls for Steinhafels to receive a maximum of 25% of its project costs, up to $2 million, from sales tax revenue collected from the store.
The money would be rebated to the retailer over a period of no more than 10 years.
The sales tax incentive for Steinhafels is a redevelopment tool the village had established to attract new tenants to vacant commercial spaces.
Orland Park has used the sales tax sharing agreement to bring new tenants to other spaces, including Pete’s Fresh Market, which is preparing to open a store in the former Art Van Furniture store at 151st Street and La Grange Road.
