Gary man charged after attacking girlfriend’s mom and sister

A Gary man faces charges after attacking his girlfriend’s mom and sister during an escalating argument.

Brandon Z. Ware, 22, was charged Thursday with robbery resulting in bodily injury, battery by means of a deadly weapon, three counts of intimidation, one count of strangulation and one misdemeanor.

He is in custody, held on a $125,000, or $12,500 cash surety bond. An initial hearing was scheduled Friday.

Gary Police responded at 10:47 p.m. Tuesday to an apartment in the city’s Miller section.

Ware’s girlfriend’s mother, 45, and sister, 19, said he came out of the girlfriend’s room shouting and cursing for them to be quiet since she was sleeping.

The sister tried to record him on her cell phone.

He threw the phone on the floor. The mother got in his face, then he attacked her. As the sister picked up the phone to call 911, he let go of the mother, then slammed the sister into the floor and threatened to kill her, according to the affidavit.

The mom, then girlfriend went to pull him off the sister.

He kicked the mother in the face, drew a gun, then pistol-whipped her once in the left side of her face.

“I will shoot y’all,” he said.

He pointed the Glock 9-mm handgun at all three women, then put it back in his pocket.

He was on top of the sister, trying to take her cell phone, when the gun fell out of his pocket. The girlfriend put it in a bedroom closet.

All three women declined paramedics.

A witness pointed out Ware’s green Honda. Police pulled him over and arrested him with another man, who has not been charged. The sister’s key fob was on the passenger floor. Ware denied it was hers.

He said he was going back to apologize and “make amends,” according to documents.

Later, with a red, damaged eye, he said it was self-defense, claiming he was jumped by the women and his hair was pulled out. Shortly later, he asked for a lawyer.

The girlfriend later said Ware offered to pay the rent if she kicked her family out.
