Gary man charged in high-speed chase, slamming into cop car

A Gary man is facing charges after leading cops on a high-speed chase from Gary to Dyer, then slamming head-on into a cop car, an affidavit shows.

Omar Muhammad, 40, was charged Sept. 27 with several felonies, including resisting law enforcement.

He posted a $5,500 bond Tuesday, records show.

His next court date is Oct. 9 before Judge Gina Jones.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael LaPorta wrote he tried to pull Muhammad over in a tan GMC SUV after he blew a stop sign near 15th Avenue and Burr Street, then sped south.

Muhammad hopped on Interstate 80/94, clocking speeds of more than 100 miles per hour while weaving between traffic. He exited southbound on Kennedy Avenue, before leading cops on a chase south to Dyer.

When the officer tried to use a law enforcement technique to force Muhammad to spin off the road near Calumet Avenue and Old Beach Road, he turned suddenly, then hit another car head-on, documents show.

Officers had to pull Muhammad out of the car to arrest him after he ignored their orders.

He smelled like alcohol, and was unsteady with bloodshot eyes. Officers got a warrant and took him to Franciscan Health Dyer for a blood draw. The BAC is not listed in documents.

Muhammad was also disruptive and told to stop yelling at the hospital.

Court records show convictions in 2006 and 2013 for fleeing from Cook County, Illinois police.

He is charged in Lake Superior Court with three counts of felony resisting law enforcement, one count of felony battery and four misdemeanors.
