Gary man charged with attempted murder after threatening Regional: records

A Gary man is facing an attempted murder case after court records show he threatened a woman over the phone at Regional Mental Health Center.

After he showed up in the afternoon wearing all black and a ski mask, East Chicago police arrested him and found a loaded AR-style rifle, loaded handgun, and additional ammunition in his car.

The affidavit does not appear to show he physically hurt the victim or others inside the building. The Post-Tribune has reached out to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for comment.

Torrence K. Lindsey-Bynum, 32, was charged Feb. 15 with attempted murder, two counts of intimidation, and one count of unlawful carrying of a handgun.

He is in custody, held on a $90,000 or $9,000 cash surety bail.

A court hearing hasn’t yet been set.

East Chicago Police responded Feb. 14 to Regional Mental Health Center, 3903 Indianapolis Blvd.

The woman told East Chicago police that Lindsey-Bynum, a Regional patient, called her in the morning on Feb. 14, upset after he got evicted for “not following” Regional’s “guidelines.”

He grew more angry as they talked.

“The Demon is coming out, I’m on my way. I’m going to blow that…up,” he said.

The woman said he had threatened other Regional facilities. She called 911.

Later on, Lindsey-Bynum showed up at 12:28 p.m. wearing all black and a black ski mask. Police were already there. They asked him to take off the mask.

“Good, you’re here. Now we can talk to them together,” Lindsey-Bynum told officers.

They asked his name.

“I’m not giving you (expletive),” he responded. “I already told you, go talk to them inside. They will tell you why I’m here.”

The officers told him they were arresting him.

“I’m not going to do (anything),” he said.

Lindsey-Bynum balled his fists, then tried to walk away from police. Officers had to restrain him, then they handcuffed him.

In the police car, he allegedly kicked out a window then unfastened his seat belt, climbed out and ran toward his car, the affidavit states.

He was restrained again and put into a police transport van.

Police found the rifle, handgun, magazines, ammunition, another black ski mask and grey gloves in his Dodge Challenger.
