A Gary man was sentenced to one year probation Friday in a plea deal for groping a woman while she slept.
Zedric Benford, 48, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery.
Gary Police responded at 5:13 a.m. Sept. 18, 2023, to the 1500 block of Bigger Street. The woman said she had been asleep on the sofa when she felt someone touching her left breast.
As she woke up, she realized Benford was standing over her. She started screaming at him. He went to the kitchen and just stared at her. She called 911.
He later told police he didn’t know what he was doing and didn’t mean it. Officers handcuffed him and took him to the Gary Police Station.
