A Geneva man accused of stabbing and killing his girlfriend and her son will remain detained at the Kane County jail, following a pretrial detention hearing on Tuesday, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Kane County Judge Julia Yetter granted the state’s motion to detain pretrial Alejandro Cota, 50, of the 2700 block of Emma’s Way, according to the Thursday news release. His next court date will be Feb. 27 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
Geneva police previously said that they responded to a domestic violence 911 call at 8 p.m. on Dec. 26, 2024, at a home on the 2700 block of Emma’s Way, according to past reporting. Officers found Christina L. Chavira, 47, and a 13-year-old identified as D.C., unresponsive and with multiple stab wounds, according to the news release.
Both were transported to area hospitals and were later pronounced dead, according to the release.
The incident was isolated to the home, according to officials, and Cota was taken into custody at the scene.
Preliminary findings from the Kane County Coroner’s Office found the cause of Chavira’s death to be consistent with multiple stab wounds, and toxicology samples were sent to a forensic laboratory for further analysis. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office found the cause of D.C.’s death to be homicide caused by multiple stab wounds, according to the news release.
Cota was charged with four counts of first-degree murder on Dec. 27, the release said.
