Girl, 15, dies after being pulled from Lake Michigan near Beach Park

A teenage girl who went under the waters of Lake Michigan Friday before being retrieved by rescue workers has died, according to Cook County Medical Examiner Office records.

The girl, 15, died Friday night after she was transported to a Chicago hospital. Autopsy results are pending, according to the medical examiner’s office. The girl’s identity has not yet been released by authorities, and attempts to reach the medical examiner’s office were unsuccessful.

According to the Beach Park Fire Department, the girl was submerged in the water at Illinois Beach State Park when firefighters were called at about 5:45 p.m. Friday.

Authorities spoke to several witnesses who directed rescue personnel to the area in the water where the girl was last seen.

Beach Park and Winthrop Harbor rescue personnel entered the water and were able to locate the girl. She did not have a pulse, but paramedics were able to re-establish one during transport to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, Beach Park firefighters said.

The girl was later transferred to a Chicago hospital where she was pronounced dead at about 11:45 p.m. Friday, according to the medical examiner’s website.
