Goodman Theatre’s house staff files petition to unionize

Chicago’s Local 2 branch of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees has filed a petition to organize the front-of-house, box office and concession staff at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. The unionization push at the Goodman follows similar, successful efforts at the Steppenwolf Theatre and other nonprofit arts organizations.

“We look forward to representing Goodman front-of-house workers and getting them a fair, collectively bargained agreement,” said IATSE business manager Craig P. Carlson.

A vote among impacted staffers is likely to be held soon.

“We respect our employees,” said longtime Goodman executive director Roche Schulfer, “and we will move forward with the appropriate process.”

The Goodman Theatre employs a mix of paid house staff and volunteer ushers, as well as concession workers and box office employees. The size of the new unit remains subject to negotiation but is expected to be around 50 people. The IATSE already has a contract with the Goodman covering many backstage workers and long has worked with the Actors Equity Association for its performers and stage managers.
