Hammond set to name interim superintendent

The School City of Hammond Board of Trustees intends to vote to approve Brent Wilson as its interim superintendent for the 2024-2025 school year at its Tuesday meeting, according to a news release.

Wilson will replace Scott Miller, who announced his departure earlier this month to become Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott’s Chief of Staff.

Wilson, who previously served for more than a decade as superintendent for the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County, will be formally approved with the ratification of his contract by the board. He has 25 years of experience in public education.

Wilson left Steuben County with a settlement in 2021 after the school board changed aspects of his contract and he countered with a breach of contract suit, according to news reports in the Steuben County Herald Republican.

The MSD of Steuben County school board was dinged in a 2021 opinion by the Indiana Public Access Counselor Luke Britt, who said it violated the Open Door Law by deciding to start a superintendent search in an executive session.
