Hebron Town Council member charged with domestic battery

A Hebron Town Council member has been charged with a felony count of domestic battery, according to court records.

Shane Spagnola, 48, of Hebron, was charged on Nov. 22 with domestic battery in the presence of a child younger than age 16, a Level 6 felony.

Spagnola, a Democrat, represents Ward 1 on the town council and was elected in 2023, taking office in January. He is liaison to the town’s fire department, according to the town’s website.

He was booked into the Porter County Jail on Tuesday, according to jail records. He had an initial hearing before Porter Superior Court Judge Christopher Buckley on Tuesday during which his bond was reduced to $1,500, according to an online court docket, and remained in jail as of Wednesday afternoon.

Hebron Police were called at 6:23 p.m. on Nov. 20 to Spagnola’s residence in the 100 block of Beech Court for a dispute, according to charging documents.

A relative told police they were having a verbal dispute with Spagnola about finances that escalated into a physical altercation during which an 11-year-old was present, charges state.

Spagnola swung his arm across a countertop and struck multiple objects, according to the charges, when Spagnola’s arm and the objects struck the relative. The relative allegedly suffered scratches to their neck and chest, and left arm pain.
