While the Great Chicago Fire scorched more than three square miles of the city 150 years ago Friday, its effect on the landscape was far wider.For some nearby towns like Elmhurst and Des Plaines, it meant an almost immediate population explosion as refugees sought shelter. And some business owners were forced to relocate operations to towns like Palatine, East Dundee and Aurora.
