Indiana American Water brings back online billing after ‘cybersecurity incident’

American Water, the parent company of Indiana American Water, said in a release that its online billing and other online services are going back up after a “cybersecurity incident” earlier this month.

The company has no indication that its water and wastewater facilities were impacted by the incident, according to the release, and the incident did not affect water quality.

Indiana American Water serves several communities in Northwest Indiana, including Gary, the Duneland communities, Merrillville and Portage, among others.

The company’s customer portal, MyWater, is now operational, and all standard billing processes are resuming. Officials have said that customers will not be assessed late charges from when the customer and billing platform was not available.

“The reactivation of systems was initiated in line with the company’s ongoing cyber incident response protocols after internal and external security teams confirmed the systems were secure,” according to the release.

The company learned about the incident on Oct. 3, officials have said.

The investigation into the nature and scope of the incident is ongoing, according to the release.
