The Indiana State Police were called to the scene of an officer-involved shooting in Valparaiso on Thursday afternoon.
A release from the Valparaiso Police Department stated that the scene was secured, but it didn’t specify the location of the shooting. However, Valpo Parks referenced the release in a Facebook post around 4:15 p.m., which stated “Fairgrounds Park will be closed until further notice as the police continue their investigation.” Fairgrounds Park is located at 704 McCord Road.
Valparaiso Councilman Peter Anderson, R-5th, posted on Facebook that there was an altercation and shooting at the park and the suspect was the only one injured.
Valpo Police said there is no threat to the public at this time, but it didn’t provide further details indicating what precipitated the shooting.
Law enforcement agencies typically call in another agency to investigate when one of their officers discharges a gun.
