Jeep crashes into Lake Villa-area house killing man, seriously injuring 2 others

A motorist is facing drunk driving and reckless homicide charges after he drove his car into an unoccupied house, killing a passenger, authorities said.

The crash happened Tuesday at around 7:35 p.m. in the 21300 block of West Engle in the Lake Villa area.

Police said Marcos Corona-Vargas, 31, of Round Lake Beach, was driving east on Engle in a Jeep when he briefly crossed into the oncoming lane, then back into the eastbound before driving off the road and striking a house.

His front seat passenger, a 22-year-old Round Lake Beach man, was killed in the crash. A backseat passenger, also a 22-year-old Round Lake Beach man, was seriously injured. Corona-Vargas also suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized.

Both remained hospitalized Thursday, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the man who was killed.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Corona-Vargas was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He has been charged with DUI and reckless homicide, police said, and he will be transported to the county jail after his discharge from the hospital.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
