Jewelers Row robber shot while attempting to steal from store downtown

A person was shot and later detained by police after attempting to rob a jewelry store downtown in broad daylight hours late Saturday morning.

The person entered Imperial Jewelry Co. in the first block of North Wabash Ave. on the infamous Jewelers Row block and attempted to steal store property, an employee of the store confirmed to the Tribune.

Another person in the store pulled out a gun and shot the would-be robber who fled the scene empty-handed, according to police.

It was not immediately clear if the shooter was employed at the store. The shooter had a valid Firearm Owners Identification card and a concealed carry license, police said.

The robber was transported to a hospital with a gunshot wound and stabilized. Charges are pending, police said.
