Kautz Road reconstruction project gets underway

The Kautz Road reconstruction and widening project in Geneva and St. Charles is now underway, officials have announced.

The initial work will include removing the roadway surface pavement, concrete curb and walking trail, according to a press release from the city of Geneva about the project. Underground utility work is anticipated to start this week, officials said.

While Kautz Road will primarily remain open to traffic, motorists should use caution when driving through the work zone and follow any posted detours, the release said. Vehicles heading west on Averill Road will not be able to turn onto Kautz Road for the next four to six weeks due to construction.

Access to the Geneva Business Park along Averill Road will not be impacted, but motorists will need to use Kirk Road to turn onto Averill Road during the closure, according to the release.

The Kautz Road project is a joint venture between the cities of Geneva and St. Charles. Construction will occur from Swenson Avenue in St. Charles to just north of State Street (Route 38) in Geneva. The project will replace failing pavement, enhance freight mobility, mitigate drainage issues, complete trail connectivity, improve safety measures and support economic development in the area, according to officials.

Construction is expected to be substantially completed by the end of the year, with landscape restoration and other smaller items being finished in spring 2025, according to the release.

More information on the project can be found on the city of Geneva’s Kautz Road Widening web page at www.geneva.il.us.
