Lake search launched after empty kayak, vest spotted off Winthrop Harbor

Fire and marine police units were launched Friday after someone spotted a kayak floating several miles from Winthrop Harbor in Lake Michigan.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said the department’s marine unit launched at around 10 a.m. to assist in the search.

The operation began after the kayak and a life vest were seen floating about two miles offshore and three miles south of the Winthrop Harbor marina, he said. Winthrop Harbor issued an alarm for extra assistance at around 11 a.m.

Covelli said late Friday morning he was not aware of any reports of people missing in the lake.
