Law & Order column: Grayslake student charged with posting school shooting threat

Grayslake police said they were notified recently of a possible threat at a local high school.

The department said it received a tip from the FBI that a Grayslake North High School student had posted a threat online to carry out a shooting at the school. Police said they worked with the school to locate and apprehend the student.

The student was charged with disorderly conduct and appeared in juvenile court. Following an assessment, the student was released to the custody of his parents, police said.

Cold truth

Gurnee police are warning residents of the dangers of “puffing,” which is leaving your car unattended while it is running.

It’s certainly tempting on these cold winter mornings to let your car warm up before you hit the road. But police said opportunistic thieves are out there, waiting for a chance to steal your vehicle.

“If your car doesn’t have remote start, bundle up and tough it out while it warms up with you inside. It’s a lot better than filing a police report in the cold,” GPD said. “Stay warm, stay safe, and keep your car your car.”

Footprints followed

Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies, with an assist from their police dog Duke, said they arrested a man who had broken into a tavern near Grayslake.

Officers said they responded at around 3:45 a.m. on Feb. 14 to the 34200 block of Route 45 after a burglar alarm sounded at a tavern. Responding officers said the business appeared normal, but the keyholder was not able to come and let police inside.

About three hours later, the business did let police know that there had, in fact, been a break-in. Officers reviewed security footage which showed a man dressed in distinctive clothing enter the business and take some items.

Officers found footprints that led to a nearby apartment in the 34000 block of Route 45, where officers said they knocked on the door of a man with an active arrest warrant for burglary.

The man, Brendan M. Wilcox, 37,  exited through a rear window and fled, police said.

Deputy Dwight Arrowood and K9 Duke were called, and they tracked Wilcox for more than an hour before locating him hiding in a wooded area about a mile away. Wilcox initially refused to surrender, but did so after Duke bit him, police said.

He was charged with burglary, theft and resisting arrest, police said.

“This incident is yet another testament to their hard work,” Sheriff John Idleburg said. “From our telecommunicators who monitored K9 Duke and Deputy Arrowood while guiding other deputies, to those who responded and gathered critical evidence, to our K9 team who ultimately made the apprehension — everyone played a crucial role and did a tremendous job – all while working in frigid temperatures.”

Narcan available

The Round Lake Park Police Department is offering free doses of Narcan to residents.

The drug counteracts the effects of an opioid overdose, and can literally be lifesaving for an overdose victim. Accidental overdoses can occur even with prescribed medications, police say.

Residents who want to get a free dose of Narcan can stop by the department’s records office during normal business hours.
