Law & Order column: Tests confirm arm found on Waukegan beach belonged to Milwaukee woman

The Lake County Coroner’s Office received confirmation that the human arm discovered on the shore of Lake Michigan in Waukegan belonged, as suspected, to a Milwaukee woman who was killed in Wisconsin in April.

DNA testing by Milwaukee authorities showed that the arm belonged to Sade Robinson, 19. Milwaukee police confirmed the finding with Lake County authorities on Tuesday.

The coroner’s office was called to a Waukegan beach on May 11 after someone walking along the shore discovered the arm. Officials quickly suspected that the arm was Robinson’s. She was killed on April 2, and parts of her dismembered body were found along the shore in the Milwaukee area.

Maxwell Anderson of Milwaukee has been charged in Robinson’s death.

“On behalf of the Lake County Coroner’s Office, I want to express our sincere condolences to Sade’s family and friends who continue to endure this tragic loss,” Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said.

Suspect back in Lake County

The Highland Park man accused of killing his two brothers has been returned to Lake County from St. Louis, where he was taken into custody.

Jeffrey Austwick, 54, made an initial appearance in Lake County Court Tuesday, where prosecutors said they would seek to have him held in jail as the case against him proceeds.

He is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of his brothers, Marc, 63, of Lake Forest and John, 60, of Mundelein.

Authorities said Jeffrey Austwick shot his brothers on or about June 5 at the house owned by their late mother before setting the residence on fire. Firefighters responding to the blaze in the 1700 block of Park Avenue West found the bodies.

Authorities issued a warrant for the suspect, who was arrested two days later in a St. Louis. He waived extradition and was returned to Lake County.

Lake rescue

The Lake County Sheriff’s Marine Unit rescued two teenagers this week who were adrift in Lake Michigan.

Marine Unit officers were on patrol Wednesday about a mile off the coast near Lake Bluff, when they spotted the 16-year-olds.

The pair, a Lake Bluff girl and a Waukegan boy, were on paddleboards but had been pushed away from shore, and were not able to return because of wind and water conditions that pushed them farther from safety.

Neither teen was wearing a life vest or had a phone. Officers were able to rescue them, retrieve their paddleboards and reunite them with their families at the Lake Forest Marina. They were not injured.

The Marine Unit has just recently resumed patrolling Lake Michigan.

“This is what this Sheriff’s Lake Michigan Patrol Boat is all about – saving lives,” Sheriff John Idleburg said. “I am so grateful we were able to replace our previous Lake Michigan boat that was retired in 2018. This allowed our marine unit deputies to save two young lives within a week of resuming patrols.”

Vehicle thefts

Deerfield police are warning residents to exercise caution following a rash of recent car thefts and break-ins.

The department said that between June 6 and 16, six vehicles were stolen and a dozen thefts from cars were reported. The crimes occurred during the overnight hours, and police have security video of thieves attempting to enter vehicles.

The department offered these tips: Remove valuables from your car or place them in the trunk. Lock your vehicle no matter where it is parked, even for a short period. Take your keys with you. Keep your garage door closed. Report suspicious behavior to 911.
