Law & Order column: Woman charged with possession of stolen vehicle after allegedly leading police on high-speed chase

A Fox Lake woman fled from police at more than 100 miles per hour in a stolen car before a police dog tracked her to a hiding spot in a neighborhood, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Kristina M. Krause, 42, of the 200 block of Grand Avenue, was charged with unlawful possession of a motor vehicle, along with aggravated fleeing and speeding counts following her arrest Monday night.

According to the sheriff’s office, she was spotted by a sheriff’s deputy around 11:10 p.m. Monday in the stolen vehicle near Illinois Route 21 and Washington Street in Gurnee. The officer tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver fled at a high rate of speed – over 100 mph – on westbound Rollins Road, police said.

According to police, the driver switched off the headlights before turning into a Round Lake Beach neighborhood. The police discontinued pursuit for safety reasons but continued to check the residential area for the car, a Dodge Charger.

An officer found the car abandoned, and a sheriff’s police dog was dispatched. The K9 tracked through several yards before finding Krause, whom police said was hiding between two bushes.

“Our continued goal is to have a sheriff’s canine team on duty 24/7,” Sheriff John Idleburg said. “Their daily impact is astounding – finding missing endangered individuals and catching fleeing felons. I am beyond proud of our entire team – from the sharp sheriff’s telecommunicators who kept countywide law enforcement in the loop, to the deputies who tracked down the stolen vehicle, and especially our canine team that apprehended the offender. This was all-around great police work.”

Lake County Sheriff’s Office will be among the police departments participating in Saturation Saturday, a stepped-up law enforcement effort to combat impaired driving Saturday

The initiative is spearheaded by the Illinois chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Illinois MADD adopted the idea which was started by the Missouri chapter of the group in 2016.

“During this annual event, law enforcement agencies in Illinois step up enforcement to keep impaired drivers off our roads. The goal is to save lives by reminding motorists that driving under the influence is a serious crime with sobering consequences,” the sheriff’s office said.

Meanwhile, the LCSO, Waukegan police and numerous other agencies across the county and Illinois have announced increased enforcement efforts to coincide with Labor Day weekend. So, watch your speed, buckle up and use a designated driver or a ride-share if you plan to use anything that will affect your driving ability.

Two men were arrested outside an Antioch bar after one of them pointed a gun at a security employee and pulled the trigger several times. The gun, though, malfunctioned and did not discharge.

Arrested were Ronald X. Owens, Jr., 37 of Lisle, and Edwin Roddy, 42, of Waukegan.

According to the sheriff’s office, the men were kicked out of an Antioch area bar in the 27800 block of West Grass Lake Road around 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 16, reportedly because they were being disruptive.

They walked to a car where Owens allegedly retrieved a firearm. They confronted security, and Owens pointed the gun and pulled the trigger several times, police said. Roddy, police said, punched one of the security team.

Owens was booked on weapons counts while Roddy was charged with battery.
