The Lake County Sheriff’s Department is crediting technology for a Tuesday arrest involving a stolen car and a high-speed chase.
Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Pam Jones said in a release that an officer shortly before noon on March 26 received an alert from the department’s license plate reader network to be on the lookout for a stolen vehicle heading eastbound on the Borman expressway. The officer found the vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver sped away, she said.
The fleeing driver led officers through Gary and Lake Station, then continued into Porter County, heading south on Indiana Highway 49, she said. Officers then performed a maneuver to stop the vehicle and arrested the driver without incident, she said.
Officers later confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen from Broadview, Illinois, Jones said.
“This is a prime example of how technology can become a critical tool allowing officers to quickly and effectively resolve crimes — including stolen vehicle cases — and take people into custody before they may commit further crime,” Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said in the release. “I’m committed to continuing to advance the sheriff’s department by investing in new technology that can help officers do their jobs.”
