Saddened about homelessness

I am writing regarding the article about record-high homelessness in Lake County that was published on Dec. 6. Throughout my college career, I have learned that folks who are homeless can be so for a variety of reasons, including lack of affordable housing. As a lifelong resident of Waukegan, I am glad to see Mayor Ann Taylor supports affordable housing and shelters.

While the article stated that homelessness can happen any time of the year, I believe during our winter months things can feel more brutal due to the cold and early sunsets. I feel saddened knowing there are families who work and do everything the “right” way, yet still find themselves without a home.

I am currently pursuing my master’s of social work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and hope to use my education to help the unhoused in a variety of ways.
