It’s the official start of beach season and the city is facing a severe, widespread lifeguard shortage that could result in closed beaches and pools this year. Chicago Park District officials say because of the pandemic, there were a shortage of American Red Cross trainings that are needed for hiring. But recruitment efforts also could be hampered because of a lifeguard sex abuse scandal last fall.
