Melvin Copeland of Elgin died last week at the age of 96 after a life that included being a scholarship college athlete, serving as a munitions specialist with the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, teaching in the Elgin area for about 40 years, and starting a new career as a therapist and social worker before retiring for good at age 90.
