Loyola men fall to VCU in their Atlantic 10 opener, while DePaul stays winless in the Big East

Loyola lost its Atlantic 10 opener Saturday, falling to Virginia Commonwealth 84-65 at Gentile Arena.

Des Watson had 20 points to lead the Ramblers (9-5, 0-1), who led by three at intermission but scored only 25 second-half points. Jayden Dawson added 10 points and Jalen DeLoach had eight points and eight rebounds.

Phillip Russell scored 25 points, Christian Fermin 14 and Jack Clark 12 points for the Rams (11-4, 1-1).

Villanova 100, DePaul 56

Eric Dixon scored 25 points, leading the host Wildcats to a blowout win and keeping the Blue Demons winless in the Big East.

Jacob Meyer’s 13 points led DePaul (9-6, 0-4), which shot 20-for-60 overall and 7-for-27 (25.9%) from 3-point range. Isaiah Rivera added 11 points and fellow reserve Layden Blocker 10. DePaul trailed 48-32 at the break and scored only 24 points in the second half.

Jordan Longino scored 19 points and Wooga Poplar 17 for Villanova (10-5, 3-1).
