Man, 61, killed in shootout near Blue Line station on Near West Side, police say

A 61-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday evening during a fight on a Near West Side pedestrian walking bridge, briefly halting CTA Blue Line trains at the UIC-Halsted stop, according to Chicago police.

A verbal altercation between two men, aged 24 and 61, escalated into an exchange of gunfire on the bridge — located near the Blue Line station — around 6:04 p.m. in the 400 block of South Peoria Street, police said.

The 61-year-old man was shot in the head, police said. He was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity wasn’t immediately released.

The CTA said in a 6:50 p.m. notification that trains near the UIC-Halsted stop were standing due to “police activity.”

Police said the 24-year-old man was taken in for questioning. The investigation “remains ongoing,” police said.
