Man accidentally shot at Elgin home on night of Fourth of July

A man was injured Thursday night in what Elgin police are describing as the “accidental discharge of a firearm.”

Officer arrived at Ascension St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin about 6:55 p.m. in response to a report of a patient who arrived with a non-life-threatening injury, an Elgin Police Department Facebook post said.

The incident occurred at a home in the 400 block of South Alfred Avenue where all the people were known to each other, the post said. A preliminary investigation indicates the shooting was accidental, not intentional.

No information on the victim’s age, home town or the nature of the injury was provided by police nor did the post say how the shooting occurred, why they believe it was accidental, if it was related the Fourth of July holiday or how the people at the residence knew each other.

Anyone with information on the incident should call 847-289-2600 or send a text to 847411, including “ELGINPD” at the beginning of the message.
