Man charged with attempted murder in shooting at Gary Metro Station

A man is facing charges after shooting and robbing an acquaintance at the Gary Metro Station.

Erich “Buck Wild” Boone, 48, was charged Tuesday with attempted murder, two counts of robbery, one count of aggravated battery and two counts of battery.

He is in custody, held without bond. His bail will be reset to $125,000, or $1,250 cash surety on Sept. 19. He appeared in court Wednesday where a public defender was appointed. His next court date is Sept. 11.

Gary Police responded around 2 a.m. Aug. 31 to 200 W. 4th Ave.

The victim, who is homeless, told police he got off the South Shore Line train from Chicago around 1:35 a.m. He called a friend for a ride, who didn’t answer. Boone approached him near the building station, then pulled out a gun and shot him in the forehead and body. Boone stole the man’s backpack with $800 and a couple of iPhones.

The shooting was caught on camera.

The victim estimated Boone fired up to five times. He was able to go back and grab two Motorola phones he dropped in some bushes. Boone fled in a black car that arrived.

The victim was taken to Methodist Hospital Northlake, then transferred to a Chicago hospital.

Police searched places Boone frequented, including the Metro station, a nearby liquor store, the Gary Public Library’s downtown branch. He was arrested from a car around 6:30 a.m. Aug. 31 on the 1500 block of W. 5th Avenue. Police recovered a .22 caliber revolver.

The victim said Boone was “known to steal from people” and resell the property.

Two witnesses told police they overheard the victim say he had a “large amount of money” the prior day.
