Waukegan police say they have charged someone for the 2022 slaying of a man who was shot 40 times in a parking lot.
Anthony Gallegos, 22, who is already serving a prison sentence in another case, was served the papers charging him with first-degree murder in the death of Alvaro Ruiz-Casillas, according to police. A grand jury indicted Gallegos on July 31.
Police say he was one of three men who shot Ruiz-Casillas on July 19, 2022. Officers were called to a parking lot in the 2400 block of Samson Way, where they found Ruiz-Casillas mortally wounded.
The investigation, police said, revealed that he was walking to his car when a vehicle drove up and three people began shooting. Ruiz-Casillas was struck 40 times by bullets, police said.
The vehicle, a Mitsubishi Outlander, then drove away. Police later recovered it in Beach Park, near a farm area, and processed it for evidence.
Waukegan police and federal agents continue to investigate in order to charge all people associated with the homicide, according to a news release.
According to Illinois Department of Corrections records, Gallegos was arrested in 2023 on a charge of unlawful possession of a gun by a felon, and was later convicted and sentenced to 54 months in prison.
