A man died in Virgil Township in Kane County on Tuesday when his vehicle crashed into a tree and caught fire after a police chase, Kane County Sheriff’s officials said.
At around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, a Kane County Sheriff’s deputy saw a black Dodge Durango going 92 mph westbound on Route 64 from the area of IC Trail Road near Virgil, according to a press release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy began a pursuit to try and stop the vehicle, but the Durango kept going and reached speeds up to 110 mph, the release said.
When the vehicle turned north on West County Line Road, the deputy briefly lost sight of it, and the pursuit was ended, according to the release.
When the deputy caught up to the vehicle, it had crashed into a tree on the west side of the road at a curve in the 50W700 block of Ramm Road, the release said.
The vehicle was almost immediately engulfed in flames, and the deputy was unable to remove the driver from the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.
The man’s identity will not be released until the Kane County Coroner’s Office is able to identify him through dental records and next of kin is notified, according to the release.
The crash is under investigation by the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, the sheriff’s office said.
