Man disarms guard, fires shot in Little Italy, triggers SWAT response: police

Charges were pending Saturday against a young man after authorities said he disarmed a security guard and fired a shot near Fosco Park in the city’s Little Italy neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

Authorities said the incident that spurred a response from the police SWAT team, began when a security guard working in the 1300 block of South Racine Avenue attempted to escort a 23-year-old man off the property.

Police did not say exactly where the incident occurred, but the address is the location of the Fosco Park fieldhouse and indoor pool.

After the 23-year-old refused to leave the location, police said a physical struggle began between him and the 57-year-old guard and the younger man struck the guard in the face before taking his firearm. The man then fired a shot without striking anyone. The guard left the area and called the police, who dispatched the SWAT team. SWAT officers cleared the building and took the gunman into custody without incident.

Authorities said charges against the man were pending as Belmont Area detectives investigated the matter.
