Man found dead and bound with power cord, duct tape; police seek suspect

Police are still searching for the person who left a 63-year-old man tied up with duct tape and a TV power cord in a Norwood Park basement late Sunday night, according to a police report obtained by the Tribune.

George Levin, of the 7600 block of West Talcott Avenue, was found dead shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday by his older sister. The siblings had eaten dinner together around 7 p.m. that night, the report stated, and Levin had gone back downstairs afterward.

Around 8:30, Levin’s 65-year-old sister heard a loud noise and went to check on him. She found the door open and encountered a person she didn’t know, and asked “is my brother OK?”

According to the police report, the person replied, “yes, I am with your brother, I will have him call you.” Levin’s sister thought he might have been “entertaining company” and didn’t want to disturb him, according to the report.

But she later sent him multiple text messages before going back downstairs around 10:45 p.m. She found him with a sock stuffed in his mouth, partially undressed, with duct tape around his hands and face and a black power cord wrapped around his ankles.

His keys, cell phone and wallet were all missing, the report stated. The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled his death a homicide due to multiple injuries.

Police said Tuesday no one is in custody in connection with Levin’s death and that area detectives were still investigating the homicide.
