A former Merrillville High School Football player was shot dead near Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting early Saturday morning.
Hammond Police spokesman Lt. Steve Kellogg said in a release Sunday that officers responded at around 3:30 a.m. to a house party in the 2300 block of New York Avenue for a report of shots fired. There, they found a young man shot dead and another man who sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot; the second man was taken to a local hospital for treatment, Kellogg said.
Javeoin Gills, 19 of the 8300 block of Polo Club Drive, was shot and killed, a Lake County Coroner’s release said Saturday night. He was shot multiple times, according to the release.
So far, police haven’t identified a suspect, Kellogg said.
Hammond Police are actively investigating the incident. Anyone who attended the party or has any information is urged to contact Hammond Police Detective Mike Elkmann at (219) 852-2982 or Detective Shawn Ford at (219) 852-2998.
