A Romeoville man was killed early Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash on the Stevenson Expressway near west suburban Lyons, according to the Illinois state police.
Killed was Amarildo Ponce, 53, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The collision happened just before 1:30 a.m. on the southbound Interstate 55 near 1st Avenue, authorities said.
Ponce was behind the wheel of a Honda Civic traveling south on the interstate in the center lane when it struck a Subaru SUV traveling beside it, state police said in a news release.
Ponce was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead about 50 minutes later, according to the medical examiner’s office. No condition was given for the second driver.
An autopsy performed Sunday determined that Ponce died from multiple blunt force injuries from the collision and the death was ruled an accident.
All southbound lanes on the Stevenson were closed for several hours as authorities investigated the crash, with traffic diverted off at 1sr Avenue, authorities said.
A possible cause of the crash wasn’t given.
