Man killed in U.S. 20 crash in Porter County

A man was killed when he drove his pickup truck left of center and crashed head-on into a semi on U.S. 20 and Brummitt Road in Porter County Monday morning.

The man’s identity has not been released, pending notification of his family. He died at the crash scene, which is in Westchester Township in Porter County.

According to the Porter County Sheriff’s Office, the man was driving his 2024 Ford Ranger westbound on U.S. 20 when he decided to pass a slower-moving vehicle just before 9 a.m. Monday.

For reasons unknown, the pickup truck went left of center and struck an eastbound semi in the left lane.

The driver of the semi-trailer attempted to avoid the collision and veered right, striking another eastbound semi.

No other injuries were reported.

The crash shut down that section of U.S. 20 for hours because cleanup was expected to take “an incredible amount of effort and time,” Sgt. Benjamin McFalls, the department’s public information officer, said in a release.

Porter County’s Crash Reconstruction team also was investigating the crash scene.
